[VINCENT] Barbara Gordon Rises!

hi all,

It's me again, with a brief interlude to what, I'm sure, is a very eventful night for you dear reader. Just finished one half of a commission from Big Wow Comicfest, and here it is for you all to see:
na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-Batgirl!
Yup! The one and only Barbara Gordon as Batgirl. I wasn't a fan of taking her back from being Oracle and in a wheelchair to fully-abled Batgirl again, but the series so far has been pretty good, so I'm shutting my mouth about that. It's no Batman though. Oh boy is that series sooo good right now.

Oh, by the way, I'm open for commissions, as many as you can send my way. Money is my friend. And enemy (shudder).  Please email me for details: kekuaokalani@gmail.com .

Thanks a bunch and see ya next week!

[JONATHAN] Memorial Day sketchin!

Black Widow, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day weekend!  That extra day really helped to have a bit more time to relax, see family and friends, and just enjoy another day to do personal stuff.  One of the things I did with that extra day was get out of the house and draw.

Wanted to do something fun and topical and right now, what's more topical than the Avengers movie?!  Can't believe how well it's done!  I'm SO happy to see another comic book movie climb to the top of the list of all-time-money-making films.  I'm thrilled that it was a fun, enjoyable movie that was a great payoff to the previous Avenger tie-in movies.  Honestly, up to this point, I was really worried.  Especially with big ensemble cast like this, I was curious how balancing their screen time would go.  And I gotta say, I was very satisfied with the results -- so satisfied that I've seen it three times in the theater!

Thought I'd take a stab at drawing Natalia Romanov, the Black Widow.  I'm happy they gave her more depth and showed how she's an effective agent in the field with her interrogation tactics.  Also thought it was cool how they kept her "spidery" and she would attack her opponents by climbing over them while assaulting them.  And when she's on the defensive, she uses her smaller stature to slide between and duck under larger objects - like a spider does.

After doing the line art, I thought I'd have fun rendering with warm and cool copic markers.  I'm happy with the results.  I scanned in the line art before I graytoned it, so gonna do some coloring on Photoshop and will post that when I'm done.

Combined with Cabin In the Woods, this has been the "Summer of Joss" for me!  Though I guess once Snow White and the Huntsman opens this weekend, it should technically be the "Summer of Hemsworth" since Chris will have been in all three.  Poor Taylor Kitsch.  I'm sure with John Carter and Battleship, he thought it was gonna be the "Summer of Kitsch".  Not so much...  Can't wait for Prometheus though!  That looks awesome!!  It'll help take the edge off losing GI Joe Retaliation for a few months due to stupid 3D conversion.  Gah!  And of course, SO looking forward to seeing the end of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy with Dark Knight Rises.  In Christopher Nolan, I trust!  Don't let me down, Chris!

[JANA] No Pants... Tuesday?

Ok, so I'm late just like Mr. Kukua and trying to jump in here before Mr. Chan posts so I can at least claim I posted before him if not on my assigned day. :-/

First... Comic reference...

"Back in the past, Batman and Son pursued some goat-masked individuals through a beef slaughterhouse — you know how Morrison loves his satanic imagery — up until a far-off sniper nearly picked off Damian from afar, and the two realized that this was all a setup to assassinate Damian. Even worse, though, was Damian’s terrible decision after going through this ordeal:"

Terrible decision, Multiversity Comics? Really? REALLY?!?! >:(
But I do loooooooove BatCow!

And then... new - and old, cuz who ISN'T inspired by burlesque? - inspiration...

I saw my first burlesque show last night (loud whisper: THAT EXPLAINS WHY I DIDN'T POST) and I got to see this lady (Alotta Bouttè) show of her stuff... and show off her stuff. ;)

Just gotta say she makes and EXCELLENT Uhura.

Go. Support the ladies and the NSFW boobies every Monday night at The Uptown with the Hubba Hubba Revue!

Ok... on to other work.

[P5] I'm late, I'm late...

hi,

It's me again. One day late, but it's cool. I had stuff. Stuff from the Big Wow Comicfest. You know, that convention my studiomates kept yammering on about on Monday and Tuesday. Yeah, that one. :P

I won't rehash their comments except to say that it was pretty great show this year. Some great guests of the show, almost all of whom I was not able to see because I was stuck at the table the majority of the two days. Drawing, always drawing. Here's a few of the sketches I was able to get done during the show:

First one of the day set a pretty high precedent. :)

He crawls in the night.

Scotty!

X-23

There were several Finn and Jake fans that came around. This sketch was fun to do.

Valentine from some game, Skull Girls. You know it?

The last was this guy who didn't get a sketch. Just bought my original design for my OC, Doktor Berlin.
I got some more commissions to take home (the list keeps growing longer and longer) and here's one that I finished up tonight:

Pretty happy with this one. I hope my commisioner is. :D

The rest of the weekend was filled up with digging through quarter bins and buying half-price trades, quietly stalking some of my favorite artists while I was away from the table (really only fifteen minutes of watching Steve Mannion and Juanjo Guarnido sketching), and being fed by the incomparable Fiona Meng, who came by Sunday with treats (as she always does at every con). Don't know Fiona? Oh, she's the one who did this:

Yeah. I hate her talent , too. Just kidding! I wanna be just like her when I grow up. Go check out mor of her amazing stuff RIGHT HERE. CLICK THIS.

Gotta get back to this pile of commission requests!

See ya next week!

[JONATHAN] Weekend Wow'd

As you could probably surmise from Jana's post (you saw Jana's post, right?), [P5] CREATIVE had a pretty good time in San Jose at the Big Wow Comicfest.  The show was definitely busier than last year, partly due to Wondercon not being in Northern California this past year.  But also, I think that this being the second year the Big Wow show was inside the actual San Jose Convention Center also helped (it use to be inside a giant plastic tent-shell kinda thing).  I'm hoping the show continues to grow and does even better next year.  I enjoy having another good-size show in Northern California.

Here's a bunch of the sketches I did at the show.  As usual, I forgot to take pictures of a few of them.  Ah well.  One day I'll get 'em all.

Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy!  Haven't done a Star Trek sketch before.  Was very happy to draw Bones!  He was my favorite character in the recent Star Trek movie.  Looking forward to seeing Karl Urban portray him again!
Spidey!  His spider-sense is tingling, but he's still giving the thumbs-up!
A very cool DJ came by and got a sketch of herself!
Artist's choice!  And lemme tell you - I love drawing robots.
A fan-favorite request, Slave Leia!  My first time drawing her!.  I'm certain more opportunities will come.
Another robot headsketch!
A mini robot to go next to Vincent's goblin and Jana's horsehead -- a P5 trifecta!
A quick robot headsketch next to Dennis Culver's Thor and Ramon Villalobos' Green Lantern -- NOT a P5 trifecta. (though they are some fun sketches!)

Zartan!  Loved the sketch request cause I loved GI Joe when I was a kid.  I spent all my available dollars on figures and vehicles.  Can't wait for GI Joe Retaliation to hit the theaters!
A robot headsketch next to Jana's horsehead sketch and Ron Lim's Thanos!  Loved me some Ron Lim back in the day!  Gonna have to reread my Infinity Gautlet issues real soon!

Vincent' Captain Sully thumbs-up sketch came first.  Felt like I needed to have a robot also giving the thumbs-up!
Hope you all liked my sketches.  Had fun doing them. And you can *probably* sense some trends.  Dunno if you can tell, but I like drawing robots.  I know, hard to ascertain since I *barely* drew any of them.  But it's true.  Oh and also, Jana likes drawing horses.  If you need further proof, look at her post from yesterday. :-P

Have a good week everyone!  See you next week with more new art!

[JANA] No Pants Post-Con Monday

Best part about posting on Mondays is I get to be the first to post my convention sketches. I would gush about the show but I'm not one much for gushing especially when it requires typing. But I will say this...

HORSIEEEEEEEEEES!

That is all. On to my Big Wow 2012 Sketches and pictures...

Mah booth set up. Chan, I have your monies!

Even the security were art critics!

P5 Creative, b**ches!
That can be taken many ways.

A quick sketch I did in a guy's Big Wow signature book which was then colored by award winning Laura Martin.
(EDIT: you're welcome)

My first sketch of the Big Wow Con was Uhura! Star Trek FTW!
I had never drawn something from Star Trek before. Glad that's changed!

Mario loved my banner so much he asked for a La Muerta sketch and I was happy to oblige!

Shonnie for Leslie! The 3 pieces that were also a blast to do! She wanted one of each of her horses.
See more below!

Mr. Edd, may he ever be bounding in green pastures in horsie heaven.

Emmett, the rescued race horse.
Leslie you are the best for taking care of these horses and asking me to draw them!

Bad Ass Dorothy for @thechadlawless.
His gf is a big Wizard of Oz fan and I loved drawing Toto with the hand (mouth?) grenade!

Last sketch of the weekend was a serial killer character from a game.
Don't know too much about her but I feel that a little of her inspiration came from Vincent in a way. ;)

Enjoy!

[VINCENT] We're where? WOW!

Hey guys!

Been extra busy with life and keeping my head above water, but I always manage to get some drawing time in every day. One day I might just dump a whole bunch of those random sketches on y'all. One day...

For now, we got BIG WOW! COMICFEST coming up and I nearly completely forgot it was happening. AGH! We'll be heading down to good old San Jose to sell ourselves and our wares to all you unsuspecting consumers. I'll have my postcards, original art, and ME at the [P5]CREATIVE table in Artists' Alley all the way in the back. I mean ALL THE WAY IN THE BACK. Come find us. Seriously. Find us. We'll give you big hugs and maybe a quick sketch if you do. :)

OK,  I got one more randomly random thing I did tonight. Don't think too much about it. It's just how my caffeine-addled brain works sometimes. No. Maybe all the time.

That's it. That's all! Good night folks! See ya next week!

[JONATHAN] Gonna do some "Wow-ing" this weekend

Here is the last sketch I had leftover from Wondercon.  It was a personal character created by the person that bought the sketch.  Think soviet super-spy a la Black Widow, but in a cowboy hat with some knives.

Speaking of convention sketches, I hope to do more of them this weekend!  Studiomates Vincent and Jana, along with myself, will be manning Artist Alley tables at the BIG WOW COMICFEST, this Saturday and Sunday (May 19 & 20) located in San Jose, California at the San Jose Convention Center (Hall 2).  Convention times are Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday 10am-5pm.  We'll be at tables AA-71 & 72 -- waaay back at the opposite end of the convention hall from where you enter. Literally!  So the easiest way to find us is, after you enter, go to the furthest spot from the entrance in Artist Alley. :-P  We'll have prints, sketchbooks, and original art for sale!

It's a pretty relaxed convention and, as a fan, I always enjoyed it because you could talk to artists and look at artwork without feeling like you had to rush out of the way, like at other bigger shows.  The guest list is pretty good too with guys like Jim Lee, Travis Charest, Frank Cho, Brandon Peterson, Kevin Nowlan, Bernie Wrightson, and Tim Sale coming to the show.  However, the artist I'm most excited for is Juanjo Guarnido - artist of Blacksad!

If you're not familiar with Blacksad, definitely do yourself a favor and try to find it.  It's won numerous awards internationally.  It was recently translated and presented to the US market through Dark Horse in a hardcover collection of the the first three Blacksad stories (preview jpg of the cover posted on the left).  The title refers to the main character, Private Investigator John Blacksad, who is an anthropomorphic cat person.  He's investigating crime cases involving murders, abductions, and more in 1950s America.

The art is absolutely stunning.  I can't recommend it high enough.  Run a search on Google Images and you'll see what I'm talking about!

[JANA] No Pants Monday remembers the past...

These are some of my favorite images from, oh... 2006? They were - and still are - some of my most influential pieces or art. These are by Sean "Cheeks" Galloway. Please give him some love and check out his new stuff too. Maybe you'll be into it.

The Amazing Joy Buzzards! READ EET!

More AJB!

I love the kid's bandage.

Spidey looks so confused and Vemon so... enthusiastic?

I'd put big money on the middle character being Cheeks, himself.
Also, I want the outfit that the girl in the orange shirt is wearing.

[VINCENT] Under The Blankets

Hello all,

I was going to only post a fanart of Craig Thompson's Blankets tonight, but something else came up. Let me tell you about it.

After work, I come home, go up to my loft and sketch a little bit while catching a little bit of the sun before it goes away for the night. My roommates are doing there thing in the living room. Jana's by the window reading when I hear a scream. Apparently, our upstairs neighbor, who has been occasionally letting off the remnants of his cleaning out his window and down and into ours, had decided it wasn't enough to throw dry garbage out the window to the cars, street, plants, and the neighbors below, but why not also throw WATER down there, too. I tolerated it before thinking it would pass, but tonight something broke and I walked upstairs and gave him a few words. No, nothing happened. Just told him there were more civilized ways of getting rid of his garbage like, for instance, a garbage CAN.

Needless to say, the incident left me just wanting to crawl under the blankets and sleep it off. And, as I am wont to do, I took to Facebook and expressed my frustration a little bit. To the rescue comes Evan Bryce Cranston, a fellow artist and November Fifth baby (remember remember), with some kind words and a bit of encouragement to get a little something, anything done tonight before I went to sleep. So I took that challenge and did this:

Allen got your tongue?
It was a quick little thing that immediately took my mind off the dumbass upstairs and made me focus. Thanks again to Evan for the boost and y'all should definitely check out his site and his work. He's great!

Onto the next one!

So, I joined a book club! Specifically a COMIC book club started by good friend Eric Royal and his fiance, Laura Buchan, both of whom have a funny webcomic you should keep a watch on called Consensual Tentacle. The idea with the book club was to motivate us to read more comics in general, but to read some books specifically and one of those books was Craig Thompson's Blankets.

The book itself is Thompson's retelling of a short, but significant time in his young life, that changed his views about people and the world around him forever. It specifically deals with issues of his family and upbringing in a strictly religious community, the trials and tribulations of his first love, and how one relationship affected how he saw everything around him. The writing was superb for a book that is almost stream-of-consciousness in its structure, which is just a byproduct of it being autobiographical. The focus of the book is his blooming relationship with a girl, Raina, from Michigan who he meets at Christian camp. He ends up staying with her family for two weeks and in that time, she gives him a gift of a blanket that she had made herself. That relationship, how it evolves and eventually dies, is the push that he needed to open up his eyes to a lot of realities of life and some of the contradictions in orthodox religions.

There's a lot to absorb in the book and a lot that I, personally, identified with, especially in regards to his disillusionment with The Church and Christianity. But, that's a debate for another time. Part of the book club is the possibility of doing fanart for the book that we are reading so several people brought their own for the first meeting and we all shared. It was a great time and I'm hoping to do it again for our next book which will be....

..... right after this break. :)
Above is my fanart for the book. There are many scenes in the book of them together in bed wrapped up in the blankets, blissfully ignorant of the world outside her bedroom door.

Hope you like it and, if you haven't read the book yet, do yourself a favor and go get it.
